Evaluating Patronage and Deliverance Through Statistics: A Project-Based, Service Learning Approach

Navasota High School students in Josh Wilkerson's AP Statistics classes completed a service learning project this spring which analyzed the professional and organizational responses to the victims of wildfires that burned in Grimes County last year. Students took control of the learning process from planning to presentation. They organized project teams. They developed, administered, and analyzed the results of a survey regarding services rendered, and they have presented their findings to the Navasota ISD Board of Trustees and the Navasota City Council. The students will publish a report in the Navasota Examiner this summer.

Project-based learning and service learning have extensive research-based support as pedagogical approaches that engage students and facilitate greater conceptual understanding. Read more about PBL and Service Learning.

  1. As a teacher, some of my best professional development occurred during the summer months. Those days are fewer as states cut budgets. Now that our dwindling staff development budgets are almost to depletion, these are the kinds of resources our teachers might find useful.
